DAISY - Our Silver Sands Pet Hero
When you walk in the front door of Silver Sands Primary ER and Critical Care you will be greeted by a receptionist, veterinary assistant, veterinary technician, a doctor and most importantly by Daisy.
Daisy is our 15-year-old resident feline of hospitality. She offers her unconditional love to all who frequent our Center. She is there to make you smile when you bring in your pet during a life-threatening emergency, she is there to say hello when you enter our primary care center, and she is always there at a time of bereavement when you need someone to hold and pet as you say good-bye to a special friend.
Daisy is fearless as she greets the giant breeds and warm and tender as she consoles those coming to our center seeking relief from pain or sickness for their companion. She is not at all shy about asking for a "pet on the head or rear" ....that is her way of telling you she is part of the Silver Sands Health Care Team.
Four years ago, Daisy was in shock from liver pathology and underwent soft tissue surgery to remove a mass on the liver. It was benign and she recovered fully. At that time, she was also affected by hepatic lipidosis. This is a common disease in felines when an excessive accumulation of triglyceride occurs in the liver. This occurs when there is an imbalance of deposition and mobilization of fat from the liver. It is the most common liver disease in cats.
It is a disease of middle aged or older cats with many cats being obese prior to illness. Clinical signs are lethargy, vomiting, and weight loss. The weight loss can be dramatic. Daisy underwent radiology exam, special imaging, clinical laboratory, surgery, and ICU nursing care. She fully recovered from the liver pathology after twelve weeks of acute nursincare.
Recently, she has been supplemented with S-adenosylmethionine [SAMe], a glutathione source. It is utilized because decreased hepatic glutathione levels occur in hepatic lipidosis. Her liver enzymes are now normal and she has been placed on a geriatric prescription diet for the aging feline, G/D by Hills. Once successfully treated, if nutritional factors and obesity are controlled, recurrence is rare with no evidence of residual hepatic damage. The earlier the treatment is initiated, the better the prognosis. Daisy presently has osteoarthritis but it does not slow her down very much. She is on a joint health supplement, Dasuquin™ which combines Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Avocado/Soybean unsaponifiables in a natural chicken and tuna flavored sprinkle capsule which is added to canned food. The drugs used to treat arthritis in the canine are not always safe in the feline. This natural supplement is quite safe and can make the geriatric years of feline osteoarthritis comfortable. Silver Sands' doctors always approach medicine from a conventional western standpoint but also utilize nutrition, nutraceuticals, and eastern medicine when the are applicable after complete work-ups have been completed.
When you come to our Primary Care ER and Critical Care Center be sure to say hello to our resident greeter and feline welcome pet Daisy. She is always there for a "pet" from you, a hello for you, and to provide comfort in times of stress. DAISY is truly a PET HERO!
